During the most recent TV development season, it was an open secret that ABC and Marvel were planning an “Agent Carter” TV series with Hayley Atwell reprising her role as Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger and the Marvel One-Shot Agent 47 short film.
Earlier this month, “Agent Carter” was ordered straight-to-series and placed in midseason time slot where it will fill in for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” during that show’s winter break.
While speaking with Marvel Entertainment’s news division, Atwell revealed that “Agent Carter” will only have eight episodes in its first season. Presumably the limited episode order will allow Atwell to maintain her feature film career in addition to the “Agent Carter” series.
“Think of the arc of eight episodes,” said Atwell. “There will be a very different facet to who [Peggy Carter] is, which won’t disappoint the fans in making sure that she has a story within herself as well as the stories of each episode in which she fights while still battling with her own demons and losing the love of her life… There’s many different ideas behind who she is and I think that she’s going to become more interesting.”
Atwell also said that “it’s surreal and humbling that a character that you’ve made four years ago, when you’ve done other jobs in other worlds and other genres, and other countries, draw you back and say ‘we want you here. We like you. We want you to tell our story.’ So, I feel that there’s a responsibility to make sure that she is what everyone wants her to be.”
“Agent Carter” will likely premiere on ABC in January 2015.
