Many will have noticed the subtle infiltration of American customs into traditional Australian sports in recent years- player names on AFL jerseys and time consuming video replays being a couple of 2014 examples. A pair of local entrepreneurs are taking it one step further when they bring the game-day past time of tailgating parties to a handful of AFL and Rubgy Union events over the coming months.
Tailgating, the gathering of fans in stadium car parks to “warmup” for their team’s big game with beers, barbeque and music, is kicking off in Sydney this Saturday for a double-header ahead of both the blockbuster AFL matchup between the Swans and Power at the SCG followed by the Roosters v Knights at Allianz Stadium. A licensed hospitality area will host the event at Moore Park’s Kippax Lake, minutes from the both venues.
Live coverage of the sports will mean punters won’t even need a ticket to the game and can stick around to enjoy all the live music, competitive games, food and drink while catching their team at the fenced-in event.
Australian tailgating will follow at a number of high-profile AFL and Union events, including the Sydney derby between the Swans and Giants and the pivotal Round 17 Swans clash against the Blues, plus a Union only weekend in July featuring matchups between the Roosters vs Sharks and Waratahs vs Highlanders.
