Rambo reinvigorates Sylvester Stallone’s career not once, but twice: the first film, First Blood, transformed the Oscar-nominated star of Rocky into an action hero just in time for the “Badass” boom of the 1980s, and the fourth film, Rambo, returned him to action hero status just in time to jumpstart a new trend in nostalgia-heavy action throwbacks with the Expendables movies. Stallone has learned that the films which turned him into an icon as still a valuable commodity, rife for exploitation with contemporary audiences. Hell, he’s already doing a seventh Rocky movie… a new Rambo shouldn’t have come as any surprise.

But the studio behind Rambo 5 is a bit of a headscratcher. The rights to the fifth Rambo movie appear to have been picked up by Splendid Film (via Coming Soon), a German distributor with only one actual production to their credit: André schafft sie alle, a 1985 comedy we can’t seem to learn anything about, other than the fact that it starred the original Django, Franco Nero.
The website for Splendid Film describes as “Sylvester Stallone’s version of No Country for Old Men” (translated from German), implying that Stallone has decided to scale back the franchise once again and keep the drama at the foreground and tone the over the top action down a bit.
This news is still very early and no release date for Rambo 5 has been scheduled. We will keep you abreast of further developments.
