In 1992, DC Comics decided to shake things up by publishing The Death of Superman, which got a lot of media attention, collector speculation and high sales… for a while.
During the subsequent twenty two years, DC and Marvel have killed off a number of their primary superheroes only to bring them back later. Captain America, Batman and Thor were among the dearly departed and the quickly returned. Hell, Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch was barely dead for a year when he got his resurrection!
Which brings to the latest casualty of the comic book death craze: Wolverine. Sure, it makes some sense to pay off Paul Cornell’s story about Logan losing his healing factor with something dire and possibly death. But if anyone believes that Marvel is going to let their cash cow stay dead for any significant amount of time… then I don’t know what to tell you.
At the very least, the preview pages from Death of Wolverine # 1 by Steve McNiven look really good. McNiven is teaming up with writer Charles Soule on the four issue Death of Wolverine miniseries that will be coming out weekly this September.
Death of Wolverine # 1 will be released on Wednesday, September 03.
