Last November, the one-night only theatrical screening of the “Doctor Who” 50th Anniversary special, “The Day of The Doctor” took in $4.8 million at the U.S. box office, to place number 2 behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Now BBC America is trying to recapture that success with a new Doctor.
BBC America has announced that the upcoming eighth season premiere of “Doctor Who” will make its debut on American movie screens in 15 cities on Saturday, August 23 at midnight. BBC America will then premiere the episode later that day at 9:00pm, with a special “Doctor Who: After Who Live” at 11:00pm hosted by Chris Hardwick with “Sherlock” co-creator and “Doctor Who” scribe, Mark Gatiss as his guest.
On Monday, August 25, the “Doctor Who” Season 8 premiere will have two showings (7:00pm and 9:30pm) in 550 theaters nationwide through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network.

The episode in question is called “Deep Breath,” which was written by Steven Moffat and directed by Ben Wheatley. “Deep Breath” finds the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) back in Victorian England alongside Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey).
BBC America will also be running a “Doctor Who” themed week running up to the season premiere, with specials including “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Companion” on Saturday, August 16 and “Doctor Who: The Ultimate Time Lord” on Monday, August 18. There will also be a “Doctor Who Takeover Week” marathon beginning on Monday, August 18 at 8:00am.
