For months, the only suspense in the Emmy race has been focused on the battle between AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and HBO’s “True Detective.” But the long awaited showdown was very one-sided at the 66th Annual Emmy Awards.
The winner and still heavyweight champion is “Breaking Bad.”
“Breaking Bad” swept almost all of the major drama categories with a fourth lead actor win for Bryan Cranston, a third supporting actor win for Aaron Paul and a second supporting actress win for Anna Gunn, as well as an outstanding writing in a drama win for Moira Walley-Beckett and a second win for best drama series.
“True Detective” took home the award for outstanding direction in a drama, courtesy of Cary Joji Fukunaga. Julianna Margulies won again in the lead actress category for her role on “The Good Wife;” which was also the only drama category win for a broadcast network.
But in comedy, the broadcast networks were once again king of the hill. Or at least, “Modern Family” was. The series won its fifth straight outstanding comedy Emmy in addition to a second supporting actor in a comedy win for Ty Burrell and a win in the outstanding comedy director for Gail Mancuso.

In the other comedy awards, Jim Parsons took home his fourth Emmy for lead actor in “The Big Bang Theory,” while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for the third time in a row as lead actress in “Veep.” Allison Janney from “Mom” was this year’s outstanding supporting actress in a comedy.
While “Fargo” and The Normal Heart took home the respective awards for outstanding miniseries and movie, the night belonged to BBC’s “Sherlock,” which picked up leading and supporting actor wins for Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as well as a writing award for “Sherlock” co-creator, Steven Moffat.
There were very few first time winners at this year’s Emmy awards, as the TV academy voters once again favored performers and shows who had won before. “The Amazing Race” won for the tenth time in the outstanding reality series competition while “The Colbert Report” picked up another win as the outstanding variety series.
