The 1968 Barbarella movie starring Jane Fonda in the title role is still the most well known iteration of that character. But prior to the movie’s release, Barbarella was one of the first adult comic books in 1962, as created by French artist and writer, Jean-Claude Forest.
According to Comics Alliance, Humanoids Publishing is releasing a new edition of Forest’s Barbarella later this month with a brand new translation adapted by comic scribe Kelly Sue DeConnick. As the story notes, Barbarella engages in “space sex adventures” while having “bawdy, encounters with a variety of strange beings, from robots to angels.”
DeConnick has previously adapted Manga comics for Tokyopop, but she has gathered a fan following for her work on Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Avengers Assemble, Ghost for Dark Horse and her creator owned comic, Pretty Deadly.
Humanoids will also be releasing an adaptation of the second Barbarella story, “The Wrath of the Minute-Eater.” However, the publisher has not yet revealed if it will also reprint the third and fourth Barbarella stories.

Earlier this year, Amazon picked up the long simmering “Barbarella” TV revival with a pilot order, but there has been no word yet on whether the project is close to being filmed. The script for the “Barbarella” pilot was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Skyfall).
The new Humanoids edition of Barbarella will be released on September 24.
