Yoshida Says Sony Is Still Hard at Work on The Last Guardian

Many fans have all but given up on the anticipated (and oft delayed) The Last Guardian, and despite its predecessor scoring movie rights and a new director, info has been sparse on the title’s progress. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida shed some light on the situation recently, confirming that at the very least, the game is actively being worked on.

Yoshida’s remarks come via an interview with Weekly Famitsu, where the interviewer asked about certain upcoming PS4 games being multi-platform. Yoshida had this to say in response.

I think it’s fine to start from there. If the number of PS4 users increases from there and they tell their friends, ‘the games look prettier on the PS4,’ or ‘the loading time’s faster,’ or ‘using the SHARE function is fun’ then the sales for PS4 versions of games will increase and game creators may think ‘let’s focus on developing for the PS4 from here.

There’s truth to Yoshida’s words; after all, Bungie’s enormous multi-platform release Destiny has seen massive sales, but functioned as a Sony exclusive in the eyes of many. Meanwhile, unlike PS3 where extra hardware muscle didn’t always mean a superior version of a game (the difficult Cell processor is to blame for that), PS4’s ease of development and PC-like architecture all but eliminate such hurdles.

Still determined to make a point, the interviewer pointed out the importance of first party development regardless of blockbuster third party releases, and proceeded to ask about progress on The Last Guardian. Yoshida replied.

Development couldn’t be better. That might be a bit of an exaggeration (laugh). We continue to work diligently on the game, so please look forward to it.

Diligently, huh? I’ll take it. Rumors all but confirm the game has hopped to PS4, so if extra time is required to bring the title up to eighth-gen standards, then I guess we have no choice but to wait.
