At its annual Blizzcon event today, Blizzard is already rolling out some exciting info. Most notable thus far is — wait for it — the announcement of a completely new IP! New IP is a big deal for Blizzard; the folks at the famed studio are masters of honing their existing properties, but haven’t put out a completely new one in over ten years. That is, of course, until today.
There isn’t exactly a flood of information about the game just yet, although there’s a presentation detailing the game going on right now. Here are the major things to note:
- Overwatch is a team-based, multiplayer shooter
- The game is “approachable,” and not difficult for newcomers to pick up and try
- It will be playable at Blizzcon with a beta in 2015
- Its release is “nearer than you think”

Exciting, no? I was a passionate Blizzard fan in my younger days, but have fallen behind on playing some of the studio’s games more recently. What better than an entirely new idea to get the gears of interest turning again? I’m sure there are plenty of players who feel the same, and for the Blizzard faithful, the prospect is probably even better. Also shown was a new trailer for StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, which you can watch below. Like most Blizzard trailers, it’s thoroughly epic and well put-together. The big detail to note here is that it will be standalone, meaning you don’t need to own any version of StarCraft 2 to play.
