“The future of sin” is coming to HBO.
Earlier this year, HBO put “Westworld” in development as a one hour drama inspired by the 1973 sci-fi film directed and written by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park). After quickly assembling one of the more impressive TV casts in recent memory, the new “Westworld” seemed like a lock for a series pickup.
Today, HBO made it official and announced via its Vine account that “Westworld” has been ordered to series for a 2015 debut. “Person of Interest” co-creator and The Dark Knight trilogy co-writer, Jonathan Nolan wrote and co-created the new take on “Westworld” with Lisa Joy. J.J. Abrams is also attached to the project as an executive producer along with Nolan, Joy, Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk. Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. TV will produce the series for HBO.
In the Westworld movie, the story took place in the near future at an advanced amusement park as the robots violently rebelled against their human masters. The “Westworld” TV series will retain some of those themes as it takes place at “the dawn of artificial intelligence.”

Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, and Evan Rachel Wood headline the cast of “Westworld,” which also includes James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Miranda Otto, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Angela Sarafyan and Simon Quarterman.
Despite the speed of the pickup, an early 2015 premiere date doesn’t seem very likely for “Westworld.” A summer or fall 2015 debut is probably in the cards.
