Fitbit, Jawbone, Garmin, Nike and Microsoft — all of them sell incredibly impressive fitness trackers. All of them cost close to $100, at the very least. One Seattle company by the name of Pivotal Living is completely blowing the lid off that market with a tracker of their own that costs only $12, and they say it will be delivered by Christmas.
What’s the catch? From what it appears, absolutely none.
The Pivotal Tracker 1 monitors everything all the aforementioned costlier devices do: steps, distance traveled, calories burned, active minutes, sleep — even a vibrating alarm. It is water resistant and syncs wirelessly while the battery lasts 5-7 days.
It is absolutely free with a $12 per year subscription to their mobile app that works on all iOS and Android devices. If you would like to renew after the year, they even send you a new tracker. Even if you don’t renew, the device still tracks your movements; you simply won’t have access to the app that reveals your long-term progress.
According to Geekwire, CEO and co-founder David Donovick spent 10 years at Microsoft and therefore seemingly knows a thing or two about the industry. But how will they make money? According to the video below, they’re not worried about that yet.
“We need to make it approachable for middle America. For people of all technical savvy levels to really unlock the potential,” says Donovick. The co-founder also stated that “This is technically the first free tracker in the world.”
Orders are being taken now at PivotalLiving.com and are promised to be delivered by Christmas.
