In 1993, the late Dwayne McDuffie teamed up with Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle to form Milestone Media, a comic imprint that focused on an ethnically diverse line of superheroes and spawned the “Static Shock” animated series.
Although it has been nearly 18 years since Milestone ceased publishing comics through DC Comics, the company is finally heading for a comeback. While speaking with the Washington Post, Cowan, Dingle and film producer Reginald Hudlin announced plans to reform Milestone Media.
While relating their reaction to the untimely death of McDuffie, Hudlin recalled that “Derek said, ‘It’s been too long. We’ve got to restart the company.’ So the three of us have been working for the past two years on sorting out all the business, and now we are the core of Milestone Media 2.0.”

As part of the new incarnation of Milestone Media, Hudlin states that they will be working with “different publishers as well as other media companies,” with concrete announcements possibly coming at Comic-Con International 2015.
It’s not clear what this means for Milestone’s longstanding relationship with DC Comics. Before McDuffie passed away, several of Milestone’s iconic characters were integrated into the DC Universe. Static played a particularly large role, and the character briefly held his own title in The New 52 relaunch.
Warner Bros. Horizons recently announced a “Static Shock” live action digital series with Hudlin attached as a producer. A release date for that project has not been revealed.
