Watch out, “Gunsmoke.” “Law & Order” may finally pull ahead as the longest running scripted drama series on television.
Almost five years after NBC unceremoniously canceled “Law & Order” after twenty seasons, the network is reportedly considering a revival of the original “Law & Order’ series as a miniseries. According to Deadline, several performers from the early seasons of “Law & Order” have been approached for the potential comeback, including Chris Noth and Sam Waterston.
However, the Deadline report also notes that the proposed “Law & Order” miniseries is not currently in active development. Only the earliest of discussions have been made about the potential revival.
“Law & Order: SVU” is still alive on NBC after seventeen seasons and that series still has an outside chance to pass or tie the original “Law & Order.” But the biggest factor that may keep “SVU” alive and allow for a miniseries revival is that “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf is currently overseeing “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD” for NBC, with a potential “Chicago Med” spinoff on the way.
The Deadline report suggests that the potential “Law & Order” miniseries could serve as the final sendoff that the original series never received. If it goes forward, the “Law & Order” miniseries could be considered the 21st season, which would give it the edge over “Gunsmoke.”
