You can’t have Supergirl in a world without Superman. Even the much maligned, 1984 Supergirl movie alluded to the Man of Steel even though Christopher Reeve declined to reprise his role as Clark Kent aka Superman.
Today, ProjectCasting.com (via KyrptonSite) sent out a casting call that seems to be for the role of Superman himself. The description requests a man who is “5-foot-11 or taller,” who also happens to have a “square-jawed” and “a ripped physique” to appear as a body double for “a DC Comic Superhero.”
Note that the casting call is only for a body double, which suggests that Superman will only make a brief cameo appearance on CBS’ Supergirl TV series to establish his existence. It’s possible that Superman could be cast later in the series for a special guest appearance, but the show is going to focus on Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s cousin who attempts to find her own her heroic role as Supergirl.
Mehcad Brooks is playing a new interpretation of Jimmy Olsen on Supergirl, while former Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart will portray Cat Grant and Laura Benanti is playing Allura Zor-El, the birthmother of Supergirl. Still to be cast is Alexandra Danvers the older foster sister of Supergirl, who is a new creation for this series.
CBS has already ordered Supergirl to series, and a premiere date will likely be announced in May at the TV upfronts.
