Many wondered what happened to Bucks forward Larry Sanders after he disappeared earlier this season. After a suspension following a positive test for marijuana earlier this year, the Bucks formally waived him off the team last Saturday, buying out his contract.
Now Sanders is sharing his side of the story via The Player’s Tribune, his main point being that he’s much more than just a basketball player.
His fascinating testimony describes how he entered a hospital to treat his depression and anxiety, and that he resorted to marijuana to treat his condition.
He continues to talk about how the NBA wasn’t his goal, and that playing in such a high-profile, lucrative position made him a walking ATM and that he had to give up his freedom of speech.
Although the former VCU star doesn’t plan on returning this season, Sanders says he may return at a later time if he works through his problems.
“I love basketball, and if I get to a point where I feel I’m capable of playing basketball again, I will,” Sanders said. “I’ve had to make the difficult decision to follow my intuition and allow myself the space and time to explore my true purpose in life.”
The video begins with, “I’m Larry Sanders, I’m a person, and …”
Sanders played in 27 games for the Busks this season, averaging 7.3 points, 6.1 boards and 1.4 blocks per game.
