Look to the skies! There’s a new Hawkgirl in town…
Deadline is reporting that relative newcomer, Ciara Renée has been cast as Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl in The CW’s untitled spinoff for Arrow and The Flash. Since her professional debut in 2013, Renée appeared in Big Fish and Pippin on Broadway and guest starred on Law & Order: SVU.
While Hawkgirl has had many different incarnations in DC’s comic book universe, the version used in the Arrow/Flash spinoff is “a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.”
The “wings that grow out of her back” is a very different take on the character. Also, the inclusion of Hawkgirl suggests that Hawkman may appear at some point.

Hawkgirl previously appeared in live action in Smallville, with Sahar Biniaz portraying her. Hawkgirl was also one of the main characters in the Justice League.and Justice League Unlimited animated series.

The Arrow/Flash spinoff pilot episode is expected to begin filming soon.
