Music mogul and rapper Jay-Z launched his new music streaming service Tidal this week, and several musicians, including Canadian band Arcade Fire, threw their support behind the service… and fans weren’t too pleased about it.
DJ deadmau5 also received criticism for showing enthusiasm for Tidal, The Canadian Press is reporting. According to the same article, Jay-Z, who is married to singer Beyonce, bought the streaming service for $56 million US from Norwegian company Aspiro last month.
They aren’t the only artists who have publicly shown support for Tidal (mainly via social media) – Kanye West, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj also tweeted recently using the hasttag #TIDALforALL, and Madonna along with Jack White are also behind the service.
The Tidal website states: “Introducing the first music streaming service that combines the best high fidelity sound quality, high definition music videos, and expertly curated editorial.” The Tidal service was launched in Canada last December and features more than 25 million songs including the diverse catalogs from Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, as well as several independent labels. They also have more than 75,000 music videos curated in their collection (Music Canada).
