Ikea has launched a new service branded Wedding Online, that allows marriages to take place entirely via webcam.
The incredibly odd service sees members of the couple’s family able to join in on the nuptials without having to grace the actual wedding service with their presence, with the head of the bride, groom and all other attendees appearing atop someone else’s body.

Along with the bride/groom’s family members, the service can also be watched by anyone else on the internet, so if you’re into having the happiest day of your life being watched by some anonymous 19-year-old watching the service while sitting in his underpants, that is now a thing that you can do.
Fortunately this service is only available in Sweden, with Ikea not having confirmed whether or not it’ll eventually make its way to other regions. We can’t imagine virtual weddings ever overtaking real ones, though it’s certainly a cost-effective way for cash-strapped couples to tie the knot without spending the first few years of their marriage debating selling their organs in order to pay the rent.
The service allows for multiple backdrops for your online wedding, including a beach and a forest, though regardless of the virtual setting it takes place in, it’ll likely never make your mother’s head being pasted onto the body of an anonymous woman any less disturbing.
For commitment-phobes, though, this could be the next best thing other than choosing to not get married and disappointing your parents. Sure, they’ll likely look at you sideways when you explain that you’re marrying your significant other over the internet, but at least you’ll actually be officially married and they can stop being concerned about you dying alone.
