CM Punk Will Write Drax The Destroyer Comic For Marvel

Earlier this year, former WWE wrestler and current MMA fighter, CM Punk lined up his first two comic book writing gigs for Marvel and DC Comics. But Punk’s next comic book project will have a much higher profile.

During his spotlight panel today at C2E2 in Chicago, Punk (real name: Phil Brooks) announced that he is co-writing an ongoing series for Drax the Destroyer for Marvel Comics. The other co-writer and the artist were not mentioned in the announcement, but given Punk’s relative inexperience in the comic industry, it is very likely that he will be paired with a veteran writer.

Drax was created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich in 1972, and this will be the first ongoing title in the character’s history. Last summer, the Guardians of the Galaxy film significantly raised Drax’s profile alongside the rest of the team. But the signing of Punk as the co-writer seems to indicate that Marvel plans a big promotional push for the Drax comics outside of its regular audience.

Marvel now has solo ongoing series planned for every member of the Guardians of the Galaxy that appeared in the film. Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon’s series are currently out, while Groot will launch during Marvel’s Secret Wars event. Gamora does not currently have a release date, but Punk’s Drax the Destroyer will be released this fall.
