Hot off the news that director Josh Trank has left the second upcoming Star Wars Anthology movie comes the news that the film is going to be all about Boba Fett, the child clone of Jango Fett who was very sad when Mace Windu killed his dad.
Of course, if that was all we knew about Boba Fett then nobody would give a damn. So the new film, which is still in production after the director of Chronicle and Fantastic Four left the project last week, will probably focus on Boba Fett’s legendary history as an intergalactic bounty hunter instead of on his whiny teen years, waiting patiently until he fit into his father’s helmet and probably never seeking psychological help for his all-consuming daddy issues.
The news came down from Jeff Sneider at The Wrap, and comes with the satisfying knowledge that casting rumors will basically be a moot point, since Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, played by actor Temuera Morrison in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. So if they don’t cast Morrison in the new anthology movie, it will be an absolute betrayal of established canon.

This news comes as no surprise whatsoever to Star Wars fans, who made Boba Fett one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars series after his brief but memorable appearance in The Star Wars Holiday Special, and his subsequent appearances in The Empire Strikes Back (in which he was cool) and The Return of the Jedi (in which he stands around and then gets accidentally knocked into a pit and dies). His story would later expand in the Star Wars comic books and novels, although none of that material is now considered canonical, at least as far as the movies are concerned.
Since the release date for the Boba Fett Star Wars Anthology movie remains unchanged, we expect official news from Disney about Josh Trank’s replacement behind the camera shortly. The film is slated for release in 2018.
