Bestwick Dethroned
Friday night brought some big surprises to X Games Austin, mainly the fact that BMX vert king Jamie Bestwick lost for the first time since the Bush administration.
That’s right. It was Vince Byron ending the longest winning streak in X Games history after he defeated Bestwick in the BMX vert with a 540 flair, a trick never before seen at the X Games.
“I knew Jamie [Bestwick] was still going to bring the heat and he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. To put it all together is my dream, it’s what I’ve been working toward all year,” said Byron
Bestwick still took silver, but it’s his first loss at the Games in nearly a decade after winning 9 golds in a row.
Byron has four medals now in the BMX vert but this is his first gold.
Bob Burnquist Makes A Comeback
X Games legend Bob Burnquist also took down 2014 gold medalist Tom Schaar in the Skateboard Big Air competition.
Burnquist landed a switch 540 over the gap into an Indy 700 landing fakie on the quarterpipe to gain the night’s highest score of 93.33. It’s only his 28th X Games medal (note sarcasm). Schaar took the bronze.
