Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 Doesn’t Look Like a Current-Gen Game

Despite the last few entries in the series ranging from mediocre to awful in terms of quality, when the announcement of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 was made I was still quite excited to hop back on my board in the hope that this game would finally be the one that could compete with my memories of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on the original PlayStation. Unfortunately, if visuals are anything to go by then it seems like the latest entry in the skateboarding franchise is shaping up to be more than a little underwhelming.

The new trailer features various hyperbolic statements from the game’s developers Robomodo, alongside the obligatory comments from Tony Hawk himself alongside an array of other pro skaters. But being repeatedly told that a game is going to be awesome (pro skater Chris Cole even refers to it as a “virtual oasis” in the clip) often translates in the gaming industry to “our game is mediocre, so instead of showing you more footage, we’re going to swarm you with talking heads who are getting to lie to your face and tell you that it’s fantastic. Judging from the footage, it seems like that could be the case here.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is the series’ first step into the current console generation, with it set to arrive on the PS4 and Xbox One in September. However, judging from the footage shown in the clip, there isn’t really anything to suggest that it’s a current-gen game. I mean, look at that tearing in the above screenshot – that’s from gameplay footage that they’ve used in the THPS5‘s first ever gameplay trailer. If that’s the kind of stuff they want to show off, I dread to think what the rest of the game looks like.

Graphics certainly aren’t everything, but given the steady demise of the once hugely popular series, visuals that look as dull as these certainly do not leave a good first impression.
