In more depressing news emerging from the EU referendum, “What is the EU?” began trending on Google in the UK after the results were announced.
The UK voted to leave the European Union in a shocking decision announced earlier today, with 52% of voters backing the nation’s exit. However, it seems that many were still baffled as to what the EU actually is, with “What is the EU?” becoming the second-highest asked question on the EU following the referendum results.
The trending results, posted by Google, were topped by “What does it mean to leave the EU?” Other questions asked by members of the British public were “Which countries are in the EU?” “What will happen now we’ve left the EU?” and “How many countries are in the EU?”
Google also reported that there was a 100% spike in UK users asking to apply for an Irish passport, while searches for buying gold soared by 500% as the nation grew increasingly worried over the state of its economy.

Meanwhile Google saw its highest ever interest in the pound sterling, with the currency having fallen to a near 30-year low following the announcement that the UK had decided to leave the EU.
