Teen Boy Attempts to Kill Girl For “Sending Him Too Many Snapchat Messages”

A teenage boy attempted to kill a teenage girl after she sent him “too many Snapchat messages,” a Utah court heard.

14-year-old Deserae Turner was shot in the back of the head and left for dead, with two 16-year-old boys accused of plotting to kill her. The teens had reportedly made plans to kill her before the shooting had taken place, with their original plot being to slit her throat. However, after one of the boys decided that he couldn’t do it on this first attempt, they invited her to a canal days later with the intention of carrying out their plan.

After once again deciding that they couldn’t slit her throat, one of the boys pulled out a gun that he had concealed as part of a backup plan, shooting her in the back of the head. According to the Salt Lake Tribune Turner had considered the boys friends, and did not see the attack coming. Sheriff Deputy Brian Groves testified that the teen who had shot Turner said he planned to kill because he “got tired” of her messaging him via the popular messaging app Snapchat. The teen said that the murder plot had started as a joke, until his friend had replied: “It would be pretty easy to get rid of her.”

According to the report, the teens took Turner’s backpack after shooting her, stealing her electronics and money while leaving her for dead. She was reported missing on the same night, and was found lying in a ditch by the canal.

The shooting, which took place on February 16, took place after Turner had confided to a friend that she was “getting picked on” by the boys, and that she thought that they “wanted to fight” her. However, Groves testified that Turner did not know that one of the teens was even carrying a gun, nor that he was holding it to the back of her head before the shooting took place.
