TGI Fridays Says You’re Eating Burgers All Wrong, Says Restaurant That Doesn’t Know How to Cook Them

If you’re a typical, red-blooded American, at this point in your life, you’ve eaten a lot of hamburgers. And you probably think there’s only one way to eat them: upright. But now, TGI Fridays (which has unfortunately rebranded as Fridays) says that you’ve been eating your burgers all wrong – and the restaurant wants to set you straight.

In an Instagram post, the eatery that specializes in everything (and is therefore exceptional at nothing) claimed that according to its “experts,” the best way to eat a burger is upside down.

“The thicker top bun soaks up the burger juices, helping keep that flavor in for longer,” the expert stated.

“The reason that many say a burger tastes better when eaten ‘upside down’ is that the top bun is thicker,” the expert continued. “So, flipping your burger means that there is more bread underneath to absorb the juices and flavors from the burger and toppings as you bite into it. It also means that your tongue meets the toppings first and the burger second.”

According to one burger blogger (dream job!), burgers have been served top bun up for aesthetic reasons, not necessarily for maximum eating enjoyment.

“The crown (the top of the bun) is generally thicker (and therefore stronger) than the heel, so for a better eating experience, you should actually flip it upside down to eat it,” explained Burger Lad blogger Simon Dukes. “The crown will then hold the weight of everything else, and there is less likelihood of it falling apart in your hands.”

OK, fine, we guess? Seems like you’ll get a mouthful of soggy bun this way.

“Whether that tastes better to you is down to personal preference — so give it a try and let us know what you find!” TGI Fridays said.

It then launched something called a #FlipItChallenge to get people to reimagine how they devour burgers.

But if Instagram is any indication, it hasn’t had much luck motivating people to turn their burger-eating technique on its head. The original post also appears to have been removed from Instagram. Perhaps it was axed out of shame?

What we were able to find were some newscasters who look like they’ve had a few too many burgers in their lives chowing (upside) down on some beef patties with all the toppings.

And the verdict is…meh? Eat your burger however you freakin’ want – but do so at a restaurant that actually knows how to prepare them.
