Mandatory Food Trends: Biscoff Lasagna Would Have Been Tony Soprano’s Dream Come True

If you’re a lasagna lover, you probably think there’s nothing better than a big pan layered with noodles, sauce, cheese, and meat, baked to bubbling and fragrant perfection. But you’d be wrong. That’s because there’s a new kind of lasagna in town, and TikTokers are eating it up. It’s called Biscoff Lasagna, and it’s a sweet treat with a suprising origin.

For those not in the know, Lotus Biscoff is a thin, caramelized cookie covered in cinnamon and sugar that was born in Belgium. It’s the kind of thing your grandparents might nibble while drinking coffee.

But the reason Biscoff Lasagna has taken off on social media is because Muslim creators were making it for Ramadan.

A bit of context: followers of Islam often gather in dessert parlors following prayer, but because the pandemic had to go and ruin everything good and holy, people of the faith had to get creative and come up with their own traditions at home. So they did, and soon different Ramadan desserts started getting spread around online.

Desserts featuring Oreos and Nutella made the rounds on social media during previous Ramadans. This year, however, Lotus Biscoff was the product everyone wanted to bake with. The brand’s maker, Lotus Bakeries, even reported a 10 percent increase in sales since the pandemic began – and it attributes it to social media.

That brings us to Biscoff Lasagna, the most indulgent dessert no one knew we needed – until now. The speculoos-flavored treat – which involves layers of Biscoff cookies, cream, vanilla, sugar, and Biscoff spread – is dangerously delicious.

We have Walla Abu-Eid, a 32-year-old teacher from Sydney, Australia, to thank for this insanely sweet sensation. She came up with the recipe during Ramadan while on lockdown in 2020.

While it does look like a lot of work to recreate, our tastebuds tell us Tony Soprano would approve.
