Jibo, the “World’s First Family Robot,” is intriguing people and freaking them out in equal measure, and it’s not difficult to see why.
Jibo is essentially a robotic butler, but aesthetically it has more in common with WALL-E’s significant other EVE than it does The Jetsons’ housekeeper Rosie. Created by social robots pioneer Cynthia Breazeal, it looks to serve as your family’s everyday helper, allowing you to schedule events, make video calls, take photographs and even order take-out on the fly. It’s no doubt an impressive piece of technology, but it being marketed as some kind of charming household pet is a little creepy to say the least.

After Jibo’s IndieGoGo campaign raised $1,400,166 (its initial goal was just $100,000), the robot is now ready to pre-order. The $199 version of the tech is now completely sold out, though the $499 home edition is still available. You can check out all the available bundles on MyJibo.com.
