The video, titled ‘Abused in an elevator’ and created by STHLM Panda, shows members of the public looking at their phones, having a conversation, drinking coffee and generally completely ignoring the two actors simulating domestic violence whilst in the elevator with them.

Only 1 out of 53 bystanders intervened, with a woman stating that she was going to “call the police” if the male actor touched the female actor again.

Speaking to The Independent, the co-creator of STHLM Panda, Konrad Ydhage, said: “We spoke to almost all of the people in the lift afterwards. Most of them said they felt ashamed of themselves for not reacting and said they were glad it was an experiment.

“Some people claimed they were going to call the police, but we think that that is lie. We filmed it over two days and the police never showed up once.”
