LA Auto Show 2014: New Ford Explorer Marks 25 Years

It might not be the sexiest vehicle on display at 2014 LA Auto Show, but the Ford Explorer served as a steadfast model in the automakers line for 25 years now. To honor its birthday, Ford is updating the new Explorer with a fresh engine, new technology and a special Platinum Edition.

The 25th anniversary Explorer will offer a 2.3-liter EcoBoost, four-cylinder engine — bringing into line with the rest of Ford’s vehicles. Fuel efficient, turbo-assisted Ecoboost engines dominate the Ford lineup from F-150 to Mustang. The Explorer’s 2.3 liter version will produce more horsepower and torque than the four cylinder currently in the vehicle with “no compromise in fuel economy anticipated,” That’s auto show talk that means Ford isn’t ready to unveil all of the details on the new Explorer. But, trust them. They have the numbers covered.

On the tech side, the new Explorer’s four-cylinder EcoBoost matches up with an available tow package and an intelligent four wheel drive with a Terrain Management System.

The Platinum Edition will max out the Explorer’s trim package and add enhanced creature comforts inside and external flares like larger wheels, more expensive rims, etc.

The new Explorer arrives for the U.S. market in mid 2015.
