The New York Times has published its annual list of the top 50 places worth visiting in the year ahead and Adelaide is the only Australian city to make the cut.
Ranked number 24 on the list, which is topped by the Italian city of Milan – host of the 2015 World Expo – Adelaide is praised for its “energetic arts scene”, with the publication recognising events like “the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide, SALA and the biennial Adelaide Film Festival” as well as the city’s Art After Dark and First Fridays events.
The South Australia capital is also praised for its “robust dining scene” and the accessibility of good local produce, while the publication notes that things like “live music, speakers, exhibitions and screenings during extended hours at Samstag Museum, the design-centric JamFactory, Art Gallery of South Australia and galleries” add to the city’s vitality.
Adelaide was ranked on the list behind New Orleans and ahead of the Republic of Georgia. “It’s great to see Adelaide is really being recognised internationally,” said Acting Premier John Rau in response to the ranking, via News.com.au. “We are becoming a vibrant world city.” Festivals Adelaide executive officer Christie Anthoney added that the ranking would be “incredibly useful for our tourism industry”. It comes just weeks before the launch of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Other places to be named on the Times‘ list, which includes a mixture of “untrammeled oases” as well as “once-avoided destinations” and “familiar cities”, are Cuba, Philadelphia, Singapore, Chile’s Elqui Valley, Faroe Islands, Macedonia, Durban, Bolivia and the Columbian city of Medellín.
