Samsung has unveiled its latest smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy A7, and rather than offering Apple users something different to their current device it seems that Samsung is instead looking to give them something very similar, at least in terms of aesthetics.

As the smartphone market moves further down the road of providing consumers with thinner handsets coupled with larger screens, the Galaxy A7 is surely a front-runner in this department. Being hailed as the “thinnest smartphone yet,” the Galaxy A7 boasts a 6.3mm thickness, compared to the iPhone 6’s 6.9mm.
The new smartphone follows up from Samsung’s announcement of the Galaxy A3 and A5, two metal-bodied devices that are smaller models of the A7 – think of the A7 as the iPhone 6 Plus of the bunch. With its 5.5-inch HD super AMOLED screen it has a display roughly the same size as the 6 Plus/Galaxy Note 2, so if you were hoping that Apple’s competing market would shift from screens that competed with tablets in terms of width, prepare to be disappointed.
The new device has a 1.8GHz quadcore and 1.3GHz quadcore processors in its tank, 2GB RAM and 16GB of in-built storage, along with a 13-megapixel auto-focus front-facing camera and a 5MP rear-facing camera.
Speaking of the company’s new announcement, CEO of Samsung Electronics JK Shin said: “We strive to develop devices that appeal to a broad range of consumers and are ahead of the next big social trend,” said JK Shin, CEO of Samsung Electronics.
“Combining both a stunning metallic design and a powerful performance, the Galaxy A7 is stylish while delivering the superior user experience.”
In terms of design, the phone looks awfully similar to Apple’s iPhone 5 series thanks to its beveled edges. Unfortunately, in terms of specs it falls well below of expectations if you were expecting it to be comparable with the iPhone 6. In truth, with the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus having proved to be a huge success, it’s difficult to imagine this being the device that gets Samsung back into the race following the disappointment of the S5. A lot depends on the marketing of the tech, though, so we’ll have to wait and see if Samsung manages what at this stage seems rather unlikely.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 will be available in Pearl White, Midnight Black, and Champagne Gold. Samsung hasn’t yet revealed what markets it will be available in, and no confirmed release date has been given.
