Milan Collections | Bottega Veneta S/S 2016

Tomas Maier had the goal of creating a collection that in essence embodied “taking a spirit rest in nature” and nailed it for the spring summer Bottega Veneta collection. It was a unique look that consisted of blazers paired with sweats; a very “disjointed chic”. It’s a great way to upgrade your casual clothes and put a spin on some of your classics at the same time.

As the models walked the runway in casual clothes transformed into insightful new looks, the inspiration for the collection was clear. Think Indiana Jones meets Robert De Niro in Casino. Knits with the necklines stretched out, looking as if they have been stitched after seeing a decade of wear, only added curiosity to the collection. Other surprising combinations were sweatpants with blazers and everything from quilted jackets to parkas, offering an outdoorsy, utilitarian, and slightly repurposed military feel.

Just as seen on the runways on the first day of Milan Fashion Week, the socks and sandals trend continued. Thus far, it seems to be one of the most hip looks for Spring 2016 and was present on the Bottega Veneta models as well. There were also references to activewear, safari and even trekking, especially in footwear. The trekking boots provided a very interesting angle, showing a bit of technicality in the collection.

With a cluttered color palette including teal, burgundy, purple and olive green, each piece seemed to take on its own personality. The crisp fabrications from fleece to Cupr, which is a Japanese-developed material like rayon, brought home the idea that this collection is no doubt the definition of casual sophistication.
