Amazon has managed to one-up Netflix with its new feature, debuting offline streaming on its Amazon Instant Video service.
Amazon Prime members in the US, UK, Germany and Austria will now be able to download movies and TV shows to iPhones, iPads, Android smartphones, tablets and Amazon Fire devices free of charge, with Amazon Instant Video being the first subscription service to offer this feature to its customers, even surpassing Netflix.
This means that Prime members can now watch movies and shows without being connected to the Internet, effectively making any time spent on public transport 100% more enjoyable than it was before.
Speaking of the new feature, Amazon’s VP of Digital Video Michael Paull said: “There’s no doubt that the way people watch entertainment is changing—anytime, anywhere viewing is important and we are excited to provide our Prime members with offline viewing capabilities on iOS and Android platforms starting today.
“We are proud to be the first and only online subscription streaming service that enables offline viewing—on vacation, in a car, at the beach, on a plane, wherever our Prime members want to watch they can, regardless of internet connection.”
This is huge news for the streaming service, with this being a widely requested feature for many of its rivals, most notably Netflix. Amazon has beaten every other subscription streaming service to the punch here, and it will undoubtedly lead many to eye up a Prime membership as a result.
