2015 LA Auto Show: Fiat Welcomes 124 Spider Back to Its Web

Like welcoming a new baby into the world, the arrival of a new, dedicated driver’s car on the Earth is a happy occasion. When that car shows up with a stylish Italian badge and an affordable price tag, gearheads around the world should rejoice.

At the 2015 LA Auto Show, Fiat dusted off the new 124 Spider – a two seater roadster headed our way in 2017.

The Fiat 124 Spider brings back an automotive legend from a bygone era. The car represents the return of almost a 50 year after the original Fiat Spider made its debut.

The new version will be powered by a turbocharged MultiAir 1.4 liter engine putting out 160 horsepower. That number doesn’t seem to heavy on the power, it’s more than ample for a two seater this light.

The 124 Spider is available with an automatic transmission. But, anyone who buys a roadster with anything but a manual (also available) should be removed from our roadways for life.

To honor the driving lovers of the world who snag this Spider first, the first 124 cars  will be available as a limited production.

Of course, you might think this is yet another would-be Mazda MX-5 Miata killer. The MX-5 is Mazda’s biggest seller and the best-best selling roadster of all time. During the 25+ years, several automakers tried to unseat the MX-5. You can include BMW, Pontiac, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Ford. Still, the Mx-5 stands.

Fiat took an interesting strategy to take on the MX-5. They partnered up with Mazda to build their new Spider. While the exterior styling is more aggressive and “Italian,” the car is built on a Mazda frame.

The MSRP and exact release date are still to be nailed down. But if it retains the Mazda MX-5 price level, the car should remain within reach of most dedicated drivers.
