What We Search For When We Search For Porn

Ever wanted to know what people in Arkansas are into? Would you have guessed that it’s animated pornography?

The famous (infamous?) adult website Pornhub – the single largest adult website in the world – with the help of news site Vocativconducted a study of their own most popular search terms, divvied off by state. The results were a little surprising, a little one-sided, and definitely interesting. Although every single search term was essentially a descriptor of a woman. Not much of a shocker: Straight males consume pornography.

The study revealed, however, that most of the country supports members of the LGBTQ community more than you might expect. In 30 states, the top search terms was “lesbian.” Meanwhile, Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, and Maine all tend to skew toward their own family members by marriage; the top search term in those states was “step sister.” Washington, Kentucky, New Hampshire, and South Dakota, meanwhile, have eyes for their own “step mom.” The most curious find was that four states – Nebraska, Vermont, Tennessee, and Arkansas are into “cartoon.” Perhaps the power of anime is more powerful than we expect. The South, meanwhile, likes black people. Mississippi and Georgia were known for “ebony,” while Louisiana searched for “black.” Given the African American population in those states, this is logical.

Rhode Island’s favorite term was “MILF,” a term that first entered the popular parlance in the mid-1990s, and is now, evidently, an entire cottage industry in The Ocean State. Hawai’i, meanwhile, is the only state that prefers “Asian.”

The below map, released by Pornhub, offers the search terms at a glance.

What does this reveal about America? We already knew that the nation loves pornography – American annually spends more money on porn than the entire GNP of sub-Saharan Africa. But, in analyzing the tastes and movement of fetishes, we can perhaps glean certain sociological conclusions. Perhaps the popularity of lesbians in pornography speaks to the way homosexuality and bisexuality are becoming more accepted. The lovers of cartoons, meanwhile, are perhaps an indicator that people are finding healthy outlets for more outlandish fetishes; this is based on what is known about ultra-violent Japanese hentai.

And, as with all studies of adult material, we can take comfort in the fact that others share our depraved fantasies. When we get down to it, most of us are pretty perverted.
