Roxy Hotel, New York Keeps It Mellow in Tribeca

There’s enough noise and haste to go forth into while visiting New York. There’s a hotel in Tribeca that’s determined to offer both travelers and local visitors a place to hide from Manhattan’s sometimes overwhelming energy.

The Roxy Hotel sits on a trapezoid of concrete between Canal Street, Church Street, Walker Street and Sixth Avenue on the border between Tribeca and Soho. It’s a young, artistic and rapidly developing neighborhood, and The Roxy wants to be a social hub for its visitors and its residents.

The Roxy’s designers successfully maintain a consistent design language throughout the property. The hotel’s cavernous main atrium creates a warmly lit and visually subdued courtyard environment with the rooms facing each other and their doors opening onto views of the lounge on the building’s main floor.

That lounge is the central social focal point for The Roxy, mixing together a blend of New York’s business-minded lunch or happy hour warriors with locals meeting friends and hotel guests unwinding after a day of touring Manhattan. Again, the vibe is kept mellow and understated.

That lounge also holds the Roxy’s restaurant and main bar, with food and drink selections available for sit-down dining or lounge-side snacking throughout the day. The same formal vs. lounge style dining offerings hold for breakfast, but the hotel’s special Sunday brunch is a strictly sit-down affair.

The food menu is not expansive, but it’s satisfying – while the cocktail menu stays to the classic side of the spectrum. Look for a separate review of the restaurant here in the coming days.

The guest rooms match the earth tones and warm lighting from the rest of the property, but they also pack a throwback look — offering a nod to what a nice hotel room might’ve looked like when Soho was humming with hippies, circa 1970. Regardless, all of the essential modern amenities are on station.

The Roxy is very new. In fact, during my review visit, workers were still putting the final touches on the uppermost floors. So, there might be the occasional glitch to iron out for a few weeks after opening. However, everything was up and running for hotel guests, and I experienced no problems during my stay.

The Roxy is well-positioned — in space and in attitude — to be popular for New York’s travelers and Tribeca’s locals.
