The rumored iPhone 7 Smart Connector has made an appearance in a leaked image of the upcoming smartphone, suggesting that the new device may be able to boast a wider and more diverse range of accessories than its predecessors.

The Smart Connector was previously implemented in Apple’s iPad Pro, allowing the tablet to connect to a Smart Keyboard using the new feature. Now the three small connectors have been spotted in a digital schematic posted by trusted tech leaker OnLeaks, allegedly offering one of the first glimpses of the upcoming device.

The image shows the three connectors lining the base of the iPhone 7, though with rumors suggesting that this feature would be reserved for the iPhone 7 Pro, OnLeaks hasn’t confirm which version of the smartphone the image portrays.

Take a look at the schematic below:

The Smart Connector provides a direct magnetic connection between the device and accessory, ensuring that the accessory never needs to be charged as it runs directly off the power of the device it is connected to.

While Apple’s Smart Keyboard was a first-party accessory that utilized the Smart Connector, the company left the door open for third-party manufacturers to create their own accessories for it, leading to the creation of the likes of the Logitech Create keyboard. If this image is to believed, then considering the larger install base of Apple’s smartphones users would likely see plenty more accessories being developed exclusively for the iPhone 7.
