The mid-2000s are making a comeback, baby. Earlier this week, fans of emo music rejoiced everywhere with the announcement of the When We Were Young music festival. Suburban millennials found themselves shocked to find that the new festival wasn’t called Warped Tour. Ironically enough, the band that wrote the song “When We Were Young” isn’t featured in the festival that takes place in its home city. Nevertheless, the festival will feature Paramore and My Chemical Romance, in addition to supporting acts such as AFI, The Used, and Alkaline Trio, among many others.
In a nutshell, this festival unites the whose-who of the emo genre, all at one nostalgia-packed show. The festival takes place on October 22, 2022, a noticeably short timeframe to organize 65 bands. The ticket price is equally as surprising, costing attendees upwards of $300 apiece. Sounds too good to be true.
Upon closer inspection, the festival is being produced by LiveNation. The same LiveNation that put on Travis Scott’s disastrous Astroworld Festival a few months back. Wait, aren’t they being sued for that? This is starting to make more sense. Nothing to see here.
To be fair, that same company has also put on plenty of successful concerts. But especially in the age of COVID, there’s something that just feels rushed about this whole thing. Worst case scenario, it’s hard not to see how this has the potential for disaster. Best case scenario, the When We Were Young festival will bring out the inner Emo slut of suburban millennials everywhere when tickets go on sale on January 21.
