The PS4’s quantum leap over the PS3 has made it a joy to work with for many developers. Some haven’t even been able to find how to use all of its muscle.
Constrast developer Sam Abbott was asked by GamingBolt how working with the PS4’s 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory has been, to which he replied:
Haha, well, it makes it really easy to get onto their platform! There is so much memory and so many cores on that machine we’re still scratching our head as to what to do with all of them.
Rumors have pointed to the system’s OS only reserving 1GB of memory, a noticeable difference for developers when compared to the Xbox One’s reserved pool of 3GB. That leaves developers with a whopping 7GB of memory to play with. It’s not your run-of-the-mill DDR3, either. It’s some of the most expensive memory on the market today: GDDR5. Sony has designed the system with the long term future in mind.
Contrast is an indie title by Compulsion Games that also supports the PS3 and Xbox 360, so it isn’t the best measurement stick for how powerful the PS4 is. Nonetheless, the system’s memory is proving capable and is leaving developers with a smile on their face.
