Episode 3.06 “Stories We Tell Our Young”
In the first half of a “Grimm” double-header, Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) hit the sewers of Portland to take on a nasty underground dweller known for tearing its victims from limb to limb.
The Gelumcaedus, as the Wesen is called, has been robbing local residents of their possessions and in some cases, their arms and legs. Even the generally unfazed Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) gets spooked when he finds the leg of the creature’s latest victim while searching a storm drain tunnel.
There isn’t a whole of mystery here, as Nick and Hank to turn to their Wesen pals, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) to help identify the creature responsible for the murders. They soon determine the killer is a Gelumcaedus, a Wesen with super-sharp teeth known for leaving alligator-like bite marks and hiding out in underground tunnels.
What is pretty cool is the bite-proof sleeve equipped with a hidden blade Grimms wear to fend off the Gelumcaedus. It does the trick when Nick and Hank first encounter the alligator-like creature, but once the detectives have the Wesen, now back in human form and going by the name Gregorak in custody, they quickly realize he’s not working alone.
Several of the robberies overlap, meaning Gregorak has a partner, or two. Actually, it’s Gregorak’s brothers who are helping him terrorize Portland citizens and seriously scare Sergeant Wu. With Gregorak in custody, his brother, Andre attacks and kidnaps Hank and reaches out to Nick to arrange a trade. Nick fulfills his end of the deal, delivering Gregorak to his brothers but when they realize he’s a Grimm or “Decapitare” as they refer to him, they decide to kill Nick instead. But as you can probably guess, the word “Decapitare” has something to do with beheading and Nick makes good on his title, more or less, by using the hidden blade in his sleeve to kill Gregorak’s brothers.
Though solving the case doesn’t involve much more than another dinner party at Monroe and Rosalee’s place, spent pouring over Aunt Marie’s books, there are some interesting developments overseas, as Adalind (Claire Coffee) meets the new prince, Viktor (Alexis Denisof) who wants to retain her legal services as the family searches for the person responsible for Eric’s murder. Prince Viktor suspects it may be someone from Portland and asks Adalind to come up with a list of possible suspects.
Meanwhile, Renard is brought to an estate where he witnesses the interrogation of a man who betrayed the family. After finally giving a name, the man is killed and Renard is invited inside for food and drink. With so little to go on, trying to care about Renard’s storyline is getting harder to do.
The fact that “Cold Blooded” is followed immediately by the promisingly titled “12 Days of Krampus” suggests this first hour isn’t meant to be the usual standalone episode but rather a lead-in to a much more exciting episode. At the very least, the title is way better.
