And to think, just a few months ago we were complaining that it was too soon to remake RoboCop. Now, producers Cassian Elwes and Evan Astrowsky are allegedly planning to remake a film that’s only 11 years old: Cabin Fever, the original horror comedy that made Eli Roth a household name to horror fans.
A report has come in from Bloody Disgusting that even though the straight-to-video Cabin Fever franchise is still going strong (Cabin Fever: Patient Zero is scheduled to premiere on June 26 of this year), Elwes and Astrowsky may be scrapping the fourth film in the series in favor of a full-fledged reboot, taking audiences back to the cabin in the woods where several attractive kids fell victim to a flesh-eating virus and a pancake-obsessed capoeira-kicking wild child.
If true, and that’s still a decent-sized “if,” it would be a pretty fast turnaround for a horror movie. Superhero movies undergo a reboot every half-decade or so lately, but horror movies have thus far mostly evaded that fate (except for Friday the 13th, apparently). One wonders if a proper remake/reboot of Cabin Fever would be enough of a novelty to bring the straight-to-video franchise back to theaters, and if so, whether it just might be better than Eli Roth’s popular, but decidedly uneven, cult hit. If they found the right filmmakers, of course.
Other horror movies that came out in 2003 include Gothika, Identity, 28 Days Later, Cold Creek Manor, Wrong Turn, House of 1,000 Corpses and, of course, Dreamcatcher. Be honest with us… would you pay to see a remake of any of those?
